Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Datok Bendahara, mula ditubuhkan pada tahun 1960 dengan menggunakan nama Sekolah Menengah Inggeris Jasin, SMIJ atau dalam bahasa Inggerisnya Jasin Secondary English School, JSES.Pada awal penubuhannya, bilangan pelajar adalah seramai 153 orang sahaja yang ketika itu menumpang di Sekolah Inggeris Jasin yang kini dikenali Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Air Baruk, sehinggalah bangunan baru sekolah ini siap pada tahun 1961. Bahasa perantaraan di SMIJ atau JSES ketika itu ialah Bahasa Inggeris.

Encik Gurdit Singh Gill merupakan pengetua pertama SMIJ atau JSES. Beliau dibantu oleh 6 orang guru, iaitu Pn. J.M.Ross, En.Kong Teng Kok, En.Wong Theam Keat, En.Nadarajan, En.Alwi b. Hj.Ahmad dan En.James Dorairaj. Encik Gurdit Singh Gill mula menjadi pengetua sekolah ini pada tahun 1960 sehinggan tahun 1961. Beliau kemudiannya diganti oleh Pn.J.M.Ross.

Pada bulan Oktober 1979, nama Sekolah Menengah Inggeris Jasin, telah ditukar kepada Sekolah Menengah Datok Bendahara di atas saranan dari Yang Berhormat Datuk Abd.Aziz b. Tapa, DKSJ., KMN., AMN., PJK., yang ketika itu merupakan Yang Dipertua PIBG SMIJ. Nama yang dipilih iaitu Datok Bendahara, adalah sebagai mencontohi kebijaksanaan dan keberanian Bendahara Paduka Raja Tun Perak, taat dan patuh seperti Bendahara Seri Maharaja Tun Mutahir dan bersemangat seperti Bendahara Seri Wak Raja. Dalam sistem pentadbiran Kerajaan Melayu Melaka, Bendahara merupakan tokoh yang penting menggerakkan sesuatu pentadbiran.

Sejak penubuhannya sehingga tahun 1967, sekolah ini mempunyai kemudahan fizikal seperti berikut;

1 unit stor sukan

1 unit bilik guru

1 unit kantin yang juga digunakan sebagai dewan

1 unit bilik rawatan

2 unit bilik Sains Rumah Tangga

2 unit bilik Makmal Sains

2 unit bilik Bengkel Seni Perusahaan

2 unit Blok Tandas

1 unit padang permainan dengan keluasan 320 kaki x 330 kaki.

Dari tahun 1968 hingga tahun 1983, beberapa bangunan tambahan telah diperolehi, iaitu;

12 unit bilik darjah

2 unit bilik makmal sains

1 unit kantin

2 unit bilik Bengkel Seni Perusahaan

2 unit blok Tandas

1 unit padang permainan seluas 8 ekar

I unit bangunan Surau di atas daya usaha PIBG dan sekolah.

SMDB was first established in 1960. It was then known as Jasin Secondary English School (JSES). The first batch og 153 pioneer students was temporarily placed in Jasin English School (now SRK Air Baruk) until 1961. The students moved into the new building of JSES after its completion. The medium of instruction was English.

Mr. Gurdit Singh Gill was the first principal of JSES entrusted with the responsibility of educating an initial 153 students. He was assisted by six teachers, namely Puan J.M.Ross, Mr.Kong Teng Kok, Mr.Wong Theam Keat, Mr.Nadarajah, Mr.Alwi b. Bj.Ahmad and Mr.James Dorairaj Amalaseelan. Mr.Gurdit Singh Gill was the principal of JSES who was then appointed as the first principal of JSES from 1960 – 1961. He was succeeded by Puan J.M.Ross from 1961 – 1963.

In October 1979, the school name from JSES change to Sekolah Menengah Datok Bendahara. The name was on the recommendation of the then PTA chairman, YB Datuk Abd.Aziz b. Tapa, DKSJ., KMN., AMN., PJK.,

The name Datok Bendahara, was choosen as an exemplary of the wisdom, and bravery of Bendahara paduka Raja Tun Perak. The loyalty and obedience of Bendahara Seri Maharaja Tun Mutahir and the spiritedness of Bendahara Seri Wak Raja. The Bendahara was the important figure in the machinery of a government.

Since the establishment of SMDB, various physical amenities were provided between 1961-1967. Among them were;

17 units of classrooms

1 unit of the school office and the Principal’s office

1 unit for the storage of the SPBT

1 unit for the sports facilities

1 unit for the staff room

1 unit for the school hall/canteen

1 unit for the school library

1 unit for the treatment room/dental

2 units for the domestic science

2 units for the science laboratory

2 units for the workshop

2 units of toilets

I unit for the sports field measuring 320 foot x 330 foot

The additional building were built from 1968 likes 12 unit of classrooms, 2 units for science laboratory, 1 units for sports field measuring 8 acres, 2 units toilets, 1 unit new canteen and 2 unit for workshop.
